There is a lot to be said for a home that is energy efficient.

You spend less money on bills like heating, you have a warmer home in the winter, and should you want to sell the home, the energy rating will have a direct impact on the price that it sells for.

Approaching how to make your home more energy efficient is something that can feel quite intimidating, so here, you will be walked through four simple steps to make your home more energy efficient in 2025.

    A Roof Assessment

Starting at the top, quite literally, if there are issues with your roof, then your home will be losing heat and letting cold air in, as well as increasing the potential for damp and respiratory issues in everyone in your home.

So, if you have noticed leaks on the upper floor, cold spots in bedrooms, or you have seen tiles or slats coming off your roof, then it is time to look into having your roof assessed. If there are extensive issues, which are more common in older homes, then it is worth considering contacting roof replacement contractors, who will be able to repair or refit the roof and prevent any long-term damage to your upper floor.

    Cavity Wall Insulation

About one-third of the heat in any home is lost via the walls, which means that come winter, the heating will go on and the home will remain cool. So, you end up spending a fortune on heating.

Cavity wall insulation involves a specialist drilling holes into a wall, identifying the space between the inner and outer wall, and filling it with insulation material. This can take several days, depending on the size of the house, but the end result is a warmer home that loses less heat through the walls.

    Double or Triple Glazed Windows

Do you still have single-pane windows? Or, have you recently bought a home that has double glazing, but there are signs of condensation between the panes of glass?

If so, it is time to have your windows refitted, and to help with energy efficiency, it is now considered standard to opt for double or triple-glazed windows. These hold heat more effectively and will also keep your home cooler in the summer. The cost of upgrading your windows will vary based on the size and how many are being replaced, but long-term, they can save you a fortune on your energy bills.

    Solar Panels

Last on the list, if you want to improve the energy efficiency of your home, it is worth looking into having solar panels fitted.

Yes, it can be costly upfront, but depending on where you live, there are government grants to help pay for the setup up and long-term, solar panels can add substantial value to your home, with real estate agents noting that in 2024, homes with solar panels sold for 3-4% more than homes that did not have them. So, they will save you money now and add value later, should you aim to sell your property.
