In the year 1991, Malvika got married to V.G. Siddhartha, the founder of the Coffee Cafe Day (CCD) brand. Malvika and Siddhartha have two sons, Eshaan and Amartya. Malvika was not involved in the business initially; instead, she was always a quiet supporter of her husband. However, she served as a non-executive board member of the Coffee Cafe Day brand for several years.

But their lives took a tragic turn when Malvika Hegde’s husband, Siddhartha, committed suicide due to heavy debt, leaving his family and the company with a heavy debt.  This is where Malvika Hegde’s business journey started to lead CCD to preserve her husband’s legacy and protect the livelihoods of thousands of employees who serve CCD.

    Malvika Hegde Entry Into Leadership

After a traffic incident, Malvika Hegde stepped into leadership and was welcomed by a humongous debt of 7,000 crore. With her outstanding mindset and determined vision, she achieved her initial success by decreasing debt from 7,000 crore to 1,731 crore in just two years. This outstanding achievement presented her as a genius in the industry and got the attention of several giants, like Netflix.

To achieve her initial goal, she focused on debt reduction, operational efficiency, and rebuilding the trust of stakeholders. Unlike other business role models, Malvika’s leadership style was characterized by empathy and resilience, qualities that resonated with her employer and stakeholders alike.

Malvik’s leadership was the key to taking Coffee Cafe Day back on track in a short time. She noted the untapped potential in exporting premium Arabica beans, so she harnessed the resources of her 20,000-acre farm to fulfill the heavy demand for these brands in the international markets. Her observing skills helped her a lot to get India’s coffee chain company back on track.

Strategy to Revive Coffee Cafe Day

The moment Malvika took charge as the CEO at Coffee Cafe Day, she faced the obvious challenge of reducing the company’s debt. Because debt has exceeded more than 7,000 crore. With her unique mindset and vision, Malvika starts a mission to restore CCD’s financial health and public trust. For this, Malvika makes some bold reforms and uses transparent strategies.

    1. Strategic Debt Reduction

For debt reduction, Malavika’s foremost strategy was to address the colossal debt. For this, she goes through strategic asset monetization, including starting the sale of non-core assets like the Global Village Park and partnerships with entities like Blackstone, Shriram Credit Company, and many more. Malvika’s strategy worked well, and the total debt of the company has now reduced from INR 7,000 crore to INR 1,363 crore.

    1. Reducing Coffee Cafe Outlets

To make the business more profitable and debt-free, Malvika took some tough decisions and reduced the CCD outlets. To reduce the outlets, first, she recognized the need for operational efficiency and made her decision accordingly. After this action taken by Malvika, the number of cafe outlets was reduced from 1752 in the financial year 2019 to 450 by the financial year 2024.

This remarkable change allowed the company to focus only on profitable locations. After this, CCD started making its reach through vending machines, which increased its count to over 52,000 by the financial year 2024.

    1. Rebuilding Trust and Morale

To rebuild trust and morale of CCD’s employees, Malvika maintained a transparent communication channel with her team. Apart from this, in an internal memo, she assured her employees by giving them a personalized, heartfelt message that resonated deeply and ignited a renowned sense of purpose and unity within the CCD organization.

    1. Overcome the Legal Challenges

In the year 2023, in September, the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) terminated the insolvency proceeding against Coffee Cafe Day Global Limited (CDGL). Malvika Hegde, director of CGDL and the wife of the late founder V.G. Siddhartha, played a key role in challenging the insolvency proceedings started by the NCLT Bangalore branch.

The Bangalore brand NCLT had admitted the insolvency pleas because of unpaid dues of INR 94 crore. However, after all the settlements, the NCLT Chennai bench set aside the NCLT, which effectively removed the corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP) against Coffee Cafe Day Global Limited (CGDL).

    Prior Customer Loyalty Over Profits

Malviak Hedge took one of the key decisions during the revival of CCD, which was to resist the common temptation of increasing the price of Coffee Cafe Day’s signature items when there was a financial crisis. On the other hand, several businesses took their stand for price hikes in times of crisis, but she successfully recognized that CCD’s loyal customers were one of the company’s biggest assets. This decision by Malvika shows her long-term vision, which aligns her immediate actions with the goal of sustained growth.

    Conclusion

Malvika’s outstanding problem-solving skills and visionary mindset helped her achieve her goal to revive India’s biggest coffee cafe chain company. Shenott not only saves thousands of loyal workers’ livelihoods but also succeeds in continuing her husband’s legacy. Her smart moves and determined efforts towards the business paid her back by reducing a significant debt amount in just two years.

This not only gained the attention of giant business owners but also grabbed the attention of one of the biggest entertainment platforms, Netflix. Malvika Hedge proves that if you have a strong will and planning, you can conquer the mountain.
