    Wajid Khan, known to the world as Wajid Ali, was an amazing Indian music director and lyricist. His career has left an indelible mark on the Bollywood music industry.     Wajid was born on 10 July 1977 in Sharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He was a very classic singer and music director for the Bollywood Industry. His career started with the support of the greatest Bollywood actor, Salman Khan. He had spent most of his childhood in Sharanpur and developed his interest in music because of his musically oriented family. His unfortunate death on 1 June 2020 at Chembur’s Surana Hospital, Mumbai, due to health complications, left his memorable songs all around.

    Wajid has music and arts in his blood, going back generations on both sides of his family. 

    Close Family Members: Wajid was born to an extremely talented family. His father, Ustad Sharafat Ali Khan, was a prominent tabla player, and his mother, Razina Khan, was also a singer. Wajid had one brother, Sajid Khan, and together they became one of India’s most popular music director duos, known as Sajid-Wajid. 

    Extended Family: Wajid’s extended family has a long and prestigious history of being involved with music. His paternal grandfather is Ustad Abdel Latif, who was a highly regarded musician; his maternal grandfather is Ustad Faiyyaz Ahmed Khan, who received the Padma Shri award; and his uncle, Niaz Ahmed, has been the recipient of the Tansen Award. Thus, the family as a whole, by passing down their love for and talents in music, have greatly contributed to the Indian classical music scene.

    Kamalrukh Khan was the wife of Wajid, who was a clinical hypnotherapist and health coach. She was a Zoroastrian (Parsi). Kamalrukh and Wajid had a loving and tumultuous relationship. Both had differing religious views, and there were family problems on both sides.

    Marriage and relationship

    Kamalrukh and Wajid met in college and dated for almost ten years. They were married under the Special Marriage Act in 2003. Their marriage did not proceed smoothly because Wajid’s family did not want to accept Kamalrukh unless she converted to Islam, which she chose not to do. As a result of their religion and family pressures, Kamalrukh and Wajid’s marriage was often very stressful for both of them.

    Kamalrukh and Wajid had two children together: a daughter (Arshi) and a son (Hrehaan). Despite the difficulties in their marriage, Kamalrukh was always committed to raising her children and supported them after she and Wajid separated.

    Divorce and Separation 

    Due to persistent pressures from both family and religion, in 2014, Wajid requested a divorce; however, he died in 2020 before completing the divorce process.

    Kamalrukh did not receive support from her husband since he died before the divorce was finalised. However, from the time Wajid died, Kamalrukh continued with her job and raising her children. Kamalrukh maintains an optimistic view of life and continues to remember Wajid fondly.

    Kamalrukh is a clinical hypnotherapist and wellness coach. She has also published a regular column in the Hindustan Times, called “Weekend Fix for the Soul.” In it, she writes about her journey and the obstacles she has overcome through interfaith marriage. Kamalrukh also raises awareness for others in similar situations to Wajid and Kamalrukh.

    Early Life and Career Beginning  

    There was much musical influence in Wajid’s upbringing. Growing up in such a musically rich environment, Wajid developed an affinity for music early in life. Wajid belonged to both the Kirana and Punjab gharanas; he began learning the guitar from the legendary Indian guitarist, Das Babu.

    Together with his brother, Sajid Khan, Wajid formed a music direction duo under the name of Sajid–Wajid. Their initial entry into the industry occurred when they created the song “Teri Jawani” for the film “Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya” (1998). In 2008, Wajid made his vocal debut by performing on the tracks “Do You Wanna Partner?” and “Soni De Nakhre,” both part of the film Partner.

    Professional Career: Rise to Fame  

    Wajid and Sajid’s music is known for its infectious energy and long-lasting appeal. Their first major success came when they were contacted by Salman Khan to compose for his 1989 film Maine Pyar Kiya. They truly established themselves as successful composers with their contributions to films such as Wanted, Dabangg, Rowdy Rathore and Veer. A few of their more famous tracks include Soni De Nakhre, Jalwa, Surili Akhiyon Wale and Muni Badnam Hui. Additionally, they have worked on various albums, including Khoya Khoya Chand, released in 2001, and Tera Intezar, which was released in 2005.

    Wajid not only served as a music director, but he also performed as a singer on many of the songs he worked on, including Wanted, Dabangg, Ek Tha Tiger, Grand Masti and Satyameva Jayate; additionally, he wrote lyrics for many hit tracks, including Jee Le, Le Le Mazaa Le and Fevicol Se. Their music extended beyond the boundary of just film soundtracks, and they also produced theme songs for the following television programs: Dus Ka Dum, Bigg Boss season 4 and Bigg Boss season 6. Their most prominent television theme song is the IPL4 theme entitled Dhoom Dhoom Dhoom Dhadaka, which has become immensely popular with the fans.

    Along with that, he has also judged singing reality shows like ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs’ and ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Singing Superstars. His last work was the soundtrack for the film ‘Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai’, where he sang the title track for the film. Overall, his life journey was very versatile, and he had left a great impact on his fans and the Bollywood industry.  

    Wajid Khan Death and Health Struggles

    As Wajid Khan grew older, he faced many significant health concerns. He underwent a kidney transplant in 2020 and afterwards developed a kidney infection, which decreased his well-being.He was admitted to the hospital at this time and placed on a ventilator in May. On June 1, 2020, he died from complications of kidney infection and heart failure related to additional underlying medical conditions at Surana Hospital in Chembur, Mumbai, at the age of 42.

    Wajid’s passing was a tremendous loss for both the music industry as well as his family. Many well-known individuals, including Aditya Pancholi, Sajid Khan, and their families, attended the funeral along with friends and family. But he was not able to handle the complications and was soon hospitalised with a kidney infection, which worsened eventually. Some of the reports indicate that his death was caused by COVID-19 infection, which weakened his immune system and eventually led to a cardiac arrest. He was on a ventilator for so many days, but he didn’t survive and passed away in Mumbai.

Wajid, may your beautiful soul find peace.” Amitabh Bachchan was shocked by the news of Wajid’s passing and called him a “bright, smiling talent.” Varun Dhawan recalled Wajid as a great friend and an inspiration for his positive attitude. Also, Priyanka Chopra expressed her admiration for Wajid’s infectious laugh and delightful personality.

    His life and career stand as an inspiration to people for the power of passion and perseverance. His songs and beautiful voice touched so many hearts and gave so many amazing tracks to groove on. Wajid‘s death was surely a shock for the industry, but he will be remembered with his songs forever!
