Plot Summary Of Vilayath Buddha Film
In the sandalwood-rich valley of Marayoor, we see a retired teacher and former Panchayat President, Bhaskaran Master (played by Shammi Thilakan). He is nurturing a rare Vilayath Buddha, a tree that is growing in his courtyard. The tree is recognised for its regained dignity after Bhaskaran fell into a pit of excreta in a humiliating manner. This embarrassing public fall took place near a local brothel, and this derailed the panchayat’s political ambitions. This left him so affected that he was battling depression.
In the next scene, we see Double Mohanan (played by Prithviraj Sukumaran) enter the picture. He is also known as Sandal Mohanan or Junior Veerappan, Bhaskaran’s former student who turned into a notorious smuggler. He is a timber trader by day, and as a worker, Mohanan has big dreams. Prithviraj wants to build a road to connect to the isolated tribal village, thus honouring his childhood sweetheart, Chaithanya. The character of Chaithanya is played by Priyamvada Krishnan, and her character is shunned by society.
In all of this, Mohanan spots the priceless tree, which is apt for Buddha carvings due to its superior quality. He soon approaches Bhaskaran to buy the tree at any cost. Vilayanath Buddha had a substantial production budget of around INR 40 crores. This high figure covered a long list of extensive shoots in the beautiful but challenging Marayoor sandalwood forests. The film also had high budgets thanks to high caliber action choreographer, VFX for smuggling sequences, and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s performance.
Unfortunately, the ambitious scale reflected the adaptation’s technical demands. The ambitious scale was handled by Arvind Kashyap and Jakes Bejoy. Although the film was a major 2025 Malayalam release, the movie did very poorly. It became a commercial disaster.
